How to use Echo to enter SNOMED codes in SystmOne

Echo can be used to automatically add SNOMED codes directly into SystmOne.

To activate this function first ensure Echo is in Coding mode by pressing the Comprehension Engine hotkey on your keyboard* until a yellow tag icon appears on the right side of the Echo window.

If using an RM microphone, you can press the F2 button instead.

*Note: by default, the Comprehension Engine hotkey is the Insert key, but this can be changed in the settings.

Once in Coding mode there are two ways that SNOMED codes are added to SystmOne. Some codes are added automatically, and some need to be triggered manually, as described below.

Automatic coding

For observations that are subjective and objective codes are added automatically, as in the examples below.

• User says: “Patient drinks x units of alcohol per week.”
• Echo automatically codes that in SystmOne with the correct SNOMED code:
• Alcohol units per week (Ub173) 8 Units/Week

• User says: “Blood pressure 120 over 80.”
• Echo automatically codes that in SystmOne with the correct SNOMED code and displays:
• BP: 120/80mmHg

Manual coding

Diagnostic and chronic disease monitoring codes must be manually triggered to ensure they are not added unintentionally. To trigger these codes simply say “SNOMED…” beforehand and the SNOMED code will be added, as in the examples below.

• User says: “SNOMED type one diabetes”
• Echo recognises that the user wishes to insert a code and enters:
• Type I diabetes mellitus (X40J4)

• User says: “SNOMED Epilepsy medication review.“
• Echo recognises that the user wishes to insert a code and enters:
• Epilepsy medication review (XaIyV)

Flagging Problems

Many SystmOne users need to ‘flag’ conditions as minor or major problems.
You can do this using Echo.

• Add a diagnosis (remember to say “SNOMED” first) 
• Then say “Major problem” or “Minor problem”
• Echo will then flag that condition as a major or minor problem.

If you need to adjust more specific details of the flagged problem, you can double click on the green text and make any required changes that way.

In summary

• Make sure you are in Coding mode
• Use Echo to enter notes as normal into SystmOne
• Automatic codes will be added seamlessly
• Manual codes can be added by saying the word “SNOMED” before the term you wish to code
