How to use coding mode (spoken word)

Coding mode

Echo will automatically add snomed codes directly into SystmOne as you speak.
Any words or phrases that can be entered as subjective or objective read codes will be recognised and entered into the system as you speak.

Any diagnostic and chronic disease monitoring codes can be manually triggered as you speak by prefixing it with the word “SNOMED”*

*Echo requires you to say “SNOMED…” to trigger the coding of diagnoses and chronic conditions to avoid any risk of accidentally adding a diagnosis unintentionally.

This guide explains how to use coding mode using spoken word via dictation.

  • Log in to Lexacom Echo
  • Observe the Lexacom Echo toolbar at the top of the screen
  • Press the Comprehension Engine® hotkey* on your keyboard and repeat until the yellow tag icon appears.
    • If you are using a handheld Olympus or Philips microphone with an F2 button, you can press this instead of Insert.

*Note: by default the ‘Comprehension Engine® hotkey’ is the ‘insert’ key but this can be changed in settings.

For all observations, subjective and objective information

  • Dictate your text into SystmOne (other clinical systems will be supported soon)
  • Codes will be identified by the Comprehension Engine®. It will automatically convert your spoken phrase into codes and text accordingly.

E.g. Dictating “Blood Pressure 120 over 80, pulse 90 patient smokes 20 per day. ” will appear as shown:

blood pressure, pulse rate and smoking status displayed in SystmOne

For all diagnoses and references to chronic conditions

  • Dictate your text into SystmOne (other clinical systems will be supported soon) adding the word ‘SNOMED’ before any diagnostic word you would like coded.
  • Codes will be identified by the Comprehension Engine®. It will automatically convert your spoken phrase into codes and text accordingly.

E.g. Dictating “SNOMED hypertension medication review, continue on same medication.” Will result in Echo’s Comprehension Engine coding the medication review and entering the free text as shown here:

We make frequent additions to Comprehension Engine®’s terminology. If a code you often use isn’t yet available please let us know.
